Alpha Phi Gamma is the first Asian American Interest Sorority established at California State Polytechnic University on
February 1, 1994. The Seven Founders, Allex
Choi, Candy Cunanan, Christine Nguyen, Sandie Rillera, Kolleen Kim, Grace Hsieh, and Jennifer Oku wanted to bring together all women of different nationalities through the bonds of friendship and sisterhood.
During the summer of 1998, Six Sisters wanted to follow in their footsteps and establish this foundation at Northern
Illinois University. These Sisters wanted to make a difference in the University and the surrounding
community.
On August 29, 1998, Alpha Phi Gamma was colonized at Northern Illinois
University. The Six Sisters who started the N.I.U. Beta Chapter are Helaine Hiso, Lani Aquino, Rowena Carmona, Roniciel Joy Molano, Michelle L. Liwanag, and
Jaymee Romasanta. These Sisters opened connections to the Alpha
Chapter of Alpha Phi Gamma in Pomona, California, and even flew to Cal Poly Pomona for the weekend of initiation. They worked
hard and remained committed to each other and to the sorority for the entire summer, and continue to strive to achieve the
goals of Alpha Phi Gamma. The sorority was established to promote service and Asian Awareness to the University and to the
community. Alpha Phi Gamma's basis is its pride in being open to new ideas and the understanding of the lifestyle of an Asian
American Woman.
As with the beginning of any organization, Alpha Phi Gamma has started to
grow in order to be able to have a strong impact in the future. The sorority is growing internally and may now focus on other
aspects of the Asian American community and the university. With such a diverse combination of so many strong women, Alpha
Phi Gamma has formed a foundation in California, Illinois, Missouri, Arizona, New York, Kansas and Michigan.
We have all created this bond of sisterhood for all women of different nationalities
to understand and assist the Asian American community in every possible way. We are not here to segregate ourselves from anyone
in the community or the university; we are here to help make this community stronger and more open minded to different cultures.
It is through our close bond that we are able to work together to achieve our goals. Though friendships may come and go, Alpha
Phi Gamma is here to stay, and our sisterhood will last a lifetime.
